When it comes to unexplained infertility, one factor that often gets missed by conventional doctors is the role of the thyroid, a small but important gland located in the throat area.


The thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy levels, and reproductive functions – which are essential for overall health and vitality. When the thyroid is balanced, it supports the reproductive system by maintaining optimal hormone levels necessary for ovulation, conception, and a healthy pregnancy.

Hormone Regulation and Ovulation

For women, thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), play a very important role in the menstrual cycle and the production and release of eggs from the ovaries. Any imbalances in thyroid hormone levels can disrupt the menstrual cycle and interfere with ovulation, making it more difficult to conceive.

Effects on Egg Quality

Thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid), can have a profound impact on egg quality. Poor egg quality significantly decreases the chances of fertilization and implantation, ultimately leading to infertility or an increased risk of miscarriage.

Uterus and Implantation

Thyroid hormones also affect the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium) and its ability to support implantation and early pregnancy. Abnormal thyroid function can disrupt these processes, making it difficult for an embryo to implant and develop properly.

Impact on Male Fertility

For men, thyroid hormones are involved in regulating sperm production and motility. Imbalances in thyroid function, whether it’s hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), can affect sperm quality and reduce fertility. In the case of infertility, both partners’ thyroid health needs to be considered when trying to conceive.

Thyroid Lab Tests

Many conventional medicine doctors only check TSH when evaluating thyroid health. Unfortunately that will not give you the full picture of thyroid health. It is extremely important to run a full thyroid panel when assessing the thyroid for fertility. These markers include TSH, free T3, free T4, total T3, total T4, reverse T3, and Thyroglobulin (TGB) and Thyroperoxidase (TPO) antibodies.

Supporting the Thyroid Naturally

It is important to nutritionally support the HPT axis (the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid) and to provide the necessary nutrients for thyroid needs to function optimally. Functional medicine practitioners may recommend thyroid glandular, mitochondrial support, iodine, and selenium.

The Root Cause of Many Thyroid Disorders

Though nutrients are an important part of thyroid health, if there are high levels of heavy metals (mercury, lead) and toxins (BPA, pesticides etc), a thyroid can be thrown out of balance. Its important to run a toxin test and detoxify when indicated.
