Functional medicine approach to fertility: finding what standard care misses.

Natural fertility support for couples who've been told everything looks normal, but pregnancy still isn't happening.

What is a functional medicine approach to fertility?

A functional medicine approach to fertility is an investigative method that looks at the body as a whole system rather than treating reproductive symptoms in isolation. Instead of focusing only on hormones, it evaluates the underlying biological environment – including immune function, mitochondrial energy production, toxic burden, gut health, chronic infections, methylation pathways, and nutrient status – to identify what is actually interfering with conception. As a functional nutritionist, I use this approach to find and address root causes, not just manage symptoms.

This matters for fertility because conception depends on far more than a normal FSH level or an unblocked tube. Egg quality is driven by mitochondrial function. Implantation depends on immune balance. Hormonal patterns are shaped by how efficiently the body detoxifies, methylates, and manages inflammation. When any of these systems are under strain — from mold exposure, chronic infection, nutrient depletion, or unresolved gut dysfunction — conception becomes harder than it should be. A functional medicine approach to natural fertility investigates all of it.

How a functional medicine approach differs from conventional fertility care

Conventional fertility care is protocol-driven. It follows evidence-based steps – timed cycles, clomid, IUI, IVF – and it does that work well. But it is not designed to investigate why your body is not conceiving in the first place. It is designed to work around the problem.

A functional medicine approach to fertility is investigation-driven. It asks: what is actually in the way? What is the biological environment doing – or not doing – that is making conception harder? And it uses advanced testing to find out, for both partners, before reaching for intervention.

The two approaches are not opposites. Many of the couples I work with are also working with a fertility clinic. A functional medicine approach often makes the next round of IVF more likely to succeed – because the underlying biology is finally being addressed.

What this approach investigates - that a standard fertility workup doesn't

  • Mitochondrial function and cellular energy production
  • Methylation pathways and epigenetic health
  • Toxic burden and environmental exposures including mold and heavy metals
  • Hidden infections and chronic pathogens
  • Immune dysregulation and inflammatory load
  • Hormone patterns via DUTCH testing
  • Nutrient status and detoxification capacity
  • Bioenergetic terrain mapping via Qest4 scanning
  • Male-factor contributors including sperm DNA fragmentation

Ready to find out what's actually in the way?

The Root Cause Fertility Consultation is a 30-minute conversation about where you are, what’s already been investigated, and whether a functional medicine approach to natural fertility makes sense for your situation. I work with couples in NYC and virtually across the US. Spots are limited.

If you’ve been told everything looks normal – or you’ve done IVF and don’t know why it didn’t work – this is where we start.
